Wyoming Perspective

The Flu and it's Affect on Wyoming Families Topic of Live Wyoming PBS Program

Avian FluThe worldwide flu epidemic of 1918 killed more people in ten months than the AIDS virus has killed in 25 years. Scientists believe they may have spotted the next pandemic brewing in the bird flu virus. Is Wyoming ready for the next flu pandemic? Wyoming Perspectives, airing Thursday, January 19 at 7 pm on Wyoming PBS, addresses this topic and its affect on Wyoming.

"The program will focus on the flu - both the typical kind that goes around every year, and the pandemic, deadly kind," said program host MJ Clark. "We will be discussing this year's flu toll, how flu vaccines are made and why they sometimes don't work, how deadly flu strains develop and what Wyoming has planned to face the next pandemic."

Scheduled guests include Dr. Brent Sherard, Director of the Wyoming Dept. of Health; Dr. Mark Dowell, an infectious disease specialist from Casper; and Dr. Cynthia Tate, DVM PhD of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Viewers are encouraged to call in questions during the program at 800-495-9788, or fax questions to Wyoming PBS at 307-856-3893 prior to the event. Questions may also be e-mailed to Wyoming PBS's general manager at: rcalvert@wyoptv.org.

General Flu Information

Schools and the Flu

It's that time of year! To help parents, administrators, teachers, and staff concerned about the flu, the Department's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (OSDFS) recently released a compilation of information and resources on preventing the spread of influenza. Schools are encouraged to be creative in keeping their communities healthy by posting information about hand washing in restrooms, providing flu messages during daily announcements, and being vigilant about cleaning and disinfecting classroom materials.
