Wyoming Families First
Wyoming Families First - "Understanding Adult Protection Services"
The program features interviews with Keith A. Miller, Ph.D.,
executive director of the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities (WIND) and
Denise Burke, Asst. Dean, University of Wyoming Law School discussing the
issues surrounding protecting vulnerable adults including the elderly and
people with disabilities.
"As with the first program we aired on domestic violence, we were faced
with some challenges producing this program because adult protection is a
complex topic that is difficult to illustrate," said Aliza Sherman, the
show's producer. "We hope this show will spark more open dialogue about
protecting the elderly and people with disabilities."
"Vulnerable adults in our communities are at risk of being mistreated or
neglected," said Rodger McDaniel, director of Wyoming's Department of
Family Services. "This program will discuss the importance of reporting
abuse or neglect as well as the available resources and services in place
to help."
Filming for the eighth segment took place in Laramie, Cheyenne and
Riverton.
"Understanding Adult Protection Services" Resources
If you suspect or have witnessed the abuse, neglect, abandonment or
exploitation of a vulnerable adult, call your local Department of
Family Services.
A vulnerable adult is any person eighteen (18) years of age or older who
is unable to manage and take care of himself or his property without
assistance as a result of advanced age or physical or mental disability.
Self-neglect is the most commonly occurring type of Adult Protective
Service case both nationally and in Wyoming.
