Wheatland beat the Casper American Legion Baseball team 5-2 in the opening round of the Wyoming State A/AA American Legion Championships on Wednesday morning at Powers Field in Cheyenne. Wheatland starting pitcher Tyler Pollock threw eight complete innings, scattered six hits and struck out four to earn the win. "[Pollock] threw well for them," Casper manager Bobby Schoonover said via text message. "We didn't make the adjustments." The Lobos (16-20 overall) added two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the second on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Timmy Becket that plated right fielder Scott Huckfeldt. The deciding run came in the bottom of the fourth when Wheatland second baseman Riley Miller's RBI single plated catcher Anthony Apodaca, who walked, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch to set up the run. Wheatland added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings, capped by Apodaca's RBI double. The Oilers (31-36) plated their first run in the top of the fifth on a Wheatland error and designated hitter Zach Granger had a RBI-single in the top of the eighth. But right fielder Pat Whited's walk was the only threat Casper mustered in the top of the ninth; Joe Hageman earned the save for Wheatland. The Oilers await the loser of Torrington-Gillette; the Lobos will face the winner in the second round.
